Letter from Elijah Miller to Frederick William Seward, February 24, 1842
Auburn 24th Febry 1842
Dear Freddy
I have ^received^ one letter from Augustus & one from
you this winter, and I this day write to you both. –
There has been scarcely any Sleighing here
this winter; I have been confined most of the time
with the Rheumatism, but have been over to Seneca
Falls by Sleighing & returned on the Rail Road,
which is completed from here to Rochester —
On the frist of March (next Tuesday) the Cars are
to run from here to Albany twice a day, soon afterwhich I intend to come down to see you all.–
I am about buying a Horse, so that you can
ride when you come here next summer.—
I have this day got the Ice House ^filled^ with ice to
bee prepared for hot weather –
There is a great movement here in the Temperance
cau cause, almost ^all^ the Drunkards are reformed among
others Rueben Smith Swift, and the groceries have
all discontinued selling Liquor ardent Spirits –
your affectionate Grandfather
E. Miller
