- Her obituary from The Boston Herald and Journal, Thursday, December 5, 1918 (as found on find-a-grave) reads: "Mrs. Catherine Louise (Webb) Benton, the widow of Colonel James G. Benton, an ordnance expert, who was one of the earliest military instructors at West Point and who was stationed 15 years at the Springfield Arsenal, died yesterday, in her 88th year, at 101 Mount Vernon Street, where she had come from her home in Newcastle, New Hampshire, to spend the winter. She was a native of New York City, her parents living in Union Square when that locality was a place of residence of prominent families. Her father was General James Watson Webb, editor of the Courier-Inquirer, now the New York World. A niece of Mrs. Benton is the wife of Ross Pulitzer, one of the present editors of the latter paper. Mrs. Benton's mother before her marriage was Miss Helen Lispenard Stewart of New York. Mrs. Benton, whose marriage to Colonel Benton took place in 1859, is survived by a daughter, Mary L. (Webb) Souter, Assistant Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard."
