In Frances Adeline Seward's letter of January 23, 1855 to Augustus Henry Seward, Rachel Boyd is the "maiden sister" of Mr. Thomas Boyd who died on January 4 of the same year. She lived in Albany with Thomas, their mother Margaret (McMurray) Boyd, their sister Maria S. (Boyd) Van Vorst, and Mr. Hooper Van Vorst.,Referred to as the "invalid and crippled" sister of Margaret (Boyd) Wharton in a letter written by Frederick W. Seward to his father, William H. Seward, dated September 19, 1868. Frederick relates how she is being relocated from Defreestville, NY to Frederick and Anna's home in Montrose. In cemetery records, Rachel Boyd's place of death is listed as Montrose, NY.
