Biographical Information
Son of Presbyterian theologian and an Episcopal Minister, Samuel Hanson Cox Sr. Husband of Elizabeth Conkling (dau. to Judge Alfred Conkling). Samuel Hansen Cox Jr was hired to be Episcopal minister in FMS' church after Mr. Crosby left. Mr. Crosby left because the church could not afford to pay him his promised salary, so he resigned and went to Boston (FMS to AHS, 18441020). Mr Cox was supposedly married in a 18450514 letter from FMS to LMW. In the aforementioned letter and in FMS to LMW 18460614, the vestry threatened to fire Mr Cox. Cox said that if he did not have the confidence of the congregation, he would resign. Strangely enough, the Bishop said that Cox could not resign until the Bishop himself dismissed him. The vestry refused to let Mr. Cox continue, and the church was closed, forcing FMS to attend the Presbyterian Church. Even the church bells could not ring in the Episcopal Church because there was no minister.
