French Forrest was born in Maryland and died in Georgetown, D.C.. He fought in the War of 1812 as a midshipman, and was made a naval captain in March 1844. During the Mexican-American War he was adjutant-general of the land and naval forces. At the beginning of the Civil War he joined the Confederates and commanded the Navy. He married Emily Forrest.
