- "MORGAN, Edwin Barber, (brother of Christopher Morgan and nephew of Noyes Barber), a Representative from New York; born in Aurora, Cayuga County, N.Y., May 2, 1806; attended the common schools; engaged in mercantile pursuits and banking in Aurora; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress, elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, and reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1859); chairman, Committee on Patents (Thirty-fourth Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1858; one of the founders and the first president of the Wells-Fargo Express Co. and a director of the American Express Co. up to the time of his death; trustee of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., 1865-1874; charter trustee of Wells College, Aurora, N.Y., 1868-1881, and served as president of the board 1878-1881; member of the board of trustees of Auburn Theological Seminary 1870-1881; died in Aurora, N.Y., on October 13, 1881; interment in Oak Glen Cemetery.
