Biographical Information
  • Charles Pomeroy is mentioned in 18330223ExM_WHS1. Elijah says that "Charles Pomroy" is one of the many Auburn locals who have converted to Methodist Christianity. In the same letter, ExM says that "Doct Bigalow" has also converted. "Bigalow" is Dr. Leander Bartlett Bigelow, Charles' brother-in-law. Leander married Frances Ann Pomeroy (1803-1833), Charles' sister.
  • Charles' father, Watrous Pomeroy, was a soldier in the War of 1812, and took an honorable part in the battle of Sackett's Harbor, N. Y., and while he was a carpenter by trade, he kept the Willard Hotel in Auburn, N. Y.
  • Charles was married twice: first in 1828 to Hopey Lonsbury, and second in 1836 to Sarah Minerva Tibbals. He had four children with Sarah Tibbals: George Throop and Michael Myers (twins b. 1837), Eliza Elmira (b. 1839), and Charles Henry (b. 1841).
  • He may also be related very distantly to Theodore Medad Pomeroy, but the connection remains unclear.
  • Pomeroy seems to have been involved in building trades and may be referenced in a letter between Frances Miller Seward and William Henry Seward, dated August 2, 1852, in which she describes the construction of a sidewalk at their Auburn residence.
