Biographical Information

Harriet Weed was born February 6, 1819, in Rochester, New York, the eldest daughter of Thurlow and Catherine (Ostrander) Weed. Harriet attended the Albany Female Academy and then served as her father's private secretary until his death. After the death of her mother in 1856, Harriet presided over the care and maintenance of their household. In 1861, she traveled with her father to France and Great Britain where he was directed by President Lincoln to drum up support for the Union cause. Harriet completed her father's autobiography, published in 1882. Harriet died at her New York City home on November 1, 1892, surrounded by friends and family.
