Biographical Information

George H. Wood was born on October 7, 1805, into a prominent and wealthy Auburn family. Walter Wood, George’s uncle, established the family fortune in Aurora and Auburn through land speculation, legal fees, and manufacturing business.

Wood was a young and prosperous lawyer in Auburn. He married Deborah “Debbie” Dill on May 14, 1829. The Dills were another prominent and well-established Auburn family. The Wood family was closely affiliated with the Miller and Seward families.

George Wood died in February 1844 at the age of thirty-eight. Frances Seward reported in a letter to Lazette Worden dated February 6, 1844, that George died of a sudden onset of lung congestion. Debbie remarried Parliament Bronson, another successful Auburn lawyer, after his death.
