Biographical Information

Alvah Worden was born to Nathan and Sara (Pulling) Worden on March 6, 1797, in Milton, New York. Worden relocated to Auburn in the 1820s where he engaged in the textile business. He was a partner in Worden & Wiltse that introduced weaving into the Auburn Prison. Their partnership dissolved in 1828.

Worden left Auburn in 1835 to practice law in Canandaigua in partnership with Mark Sibley. He served in the New York State Legislature for Ontario County in 1841, 1845, and 1846.

In 1825, Worden married Lazette Miller of Auburn, New York. Letters between Lazette and her sister Frances Miller Seward suggest that the marriage was a difficult one. Alvah and Lazette had one child, Frances Worden Chesebro.

Worden died on February 16, 1856, at the age of 58.
