Listed as laborer and living with father in 1884 Auburn directory.

'She [Harriet Bogart] married a man named Hays and had two children with him, Willis and Lewis. Her marriage to Hays dissolved shortly after the birth of her second child.' "An unfortunate marriage had taken her from our family to which she returned in a few years with two piccaninni [?] boys and remained our own Harriet until persuaded into a second marriage by Nicholas Bogart.” FAW Manuscript on the Underground Railroad, speaking of Harriet Bogart. (Willis was Harriet's son, but not Nicholas's, although he used the Bogart surname as an adult.)  Willis served in the Civil War, and wrote to Henry from camp. He was discharged in 1864, and by 1866 had been arrested and convicted of larceny in Chicago Illinois. His mother wrote to William Seward to ask if he could help obtain a pardon for Willis, which he did, telling the Governor of Illinois that he had only ever asked a governor for clemency in one other instance, the William Freeman case.
