Biographical Information

Anna Margaret (Wharton) Seward was born in 1834, the eldest child of William A. and Margaret Isabella (Boyd) Wharton of Albany, New York. Anna's father was a wholesale druggist in Albany. In a letter written to her son Augustus Seward, dated December 18, 1853, Frances Seward announced her son Frederick's engagement to Anna. Frances reported that their engagement attracted some attention for the bride's family's supposed aims at marrying up. Frederick "Fred" and Anna married on November 9, 1854. Beginning in 1858, Anna served as official hostess for her father-in-law, William H. Seward. Anna and Fred lived and worked in Washington, D.C. for the duration of the Civil War. After the war, they constructed a home in Montrose, Westchester County, New York. Anna died on May 2, 1919, in New York, New York, and is buried alongside her husband at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York.
