Biographical Information
John Edward Porter was the son of William Porter. He graduated Williams College in 1810 and commenced the practice of law in Auburn, N.Y. He served in the following positions: District Attorney of Cayuga Co. 1821-1828 Surrogate of Cayuga Co. 1828-1836 New York State Senate 1843-1846 John Porter married Abigail M. Phillips and they had five children. One of their children was Charles Talbot Porter, an inventor of mechanical devices. His daughter, Abigail Phillips Porter, married Alonzo Glover Beardsley.
